(UNC Charlotte Wind Ensemble Trombone Section)
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is pleased to offer a wide variety of instrumental ensembles  which perform regularly on and off campus throughout the academic year.  Bands are scheduled at  convenient times, allowing students to enroll in ensembles without disrupting their other academic courses.  No matter whether your interest is Symphonic Wind Ensemble, jazz ensemble or athletic bands, the University provides excellent experiences for students under the direction of dedicated and caring faculty members.

 Membership:

Membership in UNCC Bands is open to all university students, regardless of academic major. In a typical year, more than thirty fields of study are represented in University Bands.  It is recommended that students seeking to participate in an ensemble have completed a minimum of two years of band activity in high school.

 Auditions Procedures:

Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Bands: Auditions are held at the beginning of each semester during the first week of classes. A brief ten-minute audition for the Wind Ensemble includes playing selected major scales, a short prepared piece and a simple sight reading piece. The Symphonic Band utilizes a simpler audition procedure with scales and a short sight reading example required for chair assignment. The Symphonic  Band is conducted by Harry Owens.
PAST Symphonic Wind Ensemble PROGRAMS

Jazz Ensemble/Combos Membership in the Jazz Ensemble  and Jazz Combos is organized at the beginning of each semester. It is not necessary to have played in a jazz ensemble in high school.

Basketball Band The Basketball Band organizes at the beginning of the fall semester and performs from October to May, at both men's and women's basketball games, rallies and other campus events.  No formal audition is required for Basketball Band. The conductor will check range and sight reading ability in terms of part assignments in each section.

Band Organizations:

Symphonic Wind Ensemble: The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the most advanced ensemble for wind and percussion players at UNC-Charlotte and includes 55 to 60 participants annually.  While the majority of its members are music majors, many students from other academic disciplines are also represented on the roster.  The Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearses MW-12:30-1:45 (with a rotating day on Friday) in Robinson Hall Building, Room 210.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs traditional and contemporary wind band literature of the highest caliber and regularly features soloists and other guest artists on concerts presented every 6-7 weeks, or twice per semester.   The Symphonic Wind Ensemble has taken annual tours to Virginia and throughout North Carolina. In November 2007 the Wind Ensemble performed for the Music Educators' Conference in Winston Salem. In February 2006, the Wind Ensemble was invited to perform for the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. PAST Symphonic Wind Ensemble PROGRAMS

Symphonic Band:  The Symphonic Band includes music majors and non-music majors from throughout the university.  The Symphonic Band will meet Tue/Thurs. afternoons, 5:00 to 6:15 in Room 210, Robinson Hall.

The Symphonic Band has been designed to provide another performance option for non-music majors who may not be able to schedule Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The Symphonic Band rehearses and performs a wide variety of band literature, grades V-VI, often featuring student and faculty soloists under the direction of various conductors. The Symphonic Band will perform both on and off the UNC-Charlotte campus and give two concerts per semester.

Jazz Ensemble/Combos: The Jazz Ensemble is a traditional "big band," featuring 17-20 musicians.  The  typical instrumentation includes a saxophone section, trombone section, trumpet section and rhythm section.  Music presented on programs is typically a blend of new compositions and old "standards" from the big band.  The Jazz Ensemble meets T/Th,12:30-1:45 pm.

Two jazz combos are sponsored by the Department, in addition to the Jazz Ensemble.  Combos generally include six to eight members.  A combo is a rhythm section plus soloists on most any instrument.  The combos are scheduled at 9:00-9:50 MWF and 2:00-2:50 MWF.  Placement is these ensembles is determined by a faculty member.

Basketball Band: Representing UNC-Charlotte at University men's and women's basketball contests, the Basketball Band appears at all home games, at Atlantic 10 tournament games and at NCAA tournament events.  Charlotte has annually produced one of the top teams in the conference and has appeared in the NCAA tournament four of the five past seasons.

The Basketball Band is open to all students and rehearses M/W 5:00 to 6:15 in Rowe Recital Hall.   Music performed by this band ranges for familiar pop tunes (classic and current hits), rock 'n roll,  jazz and chant music and cheer songs accompanied by the audience. The Band receives 1.0 of academic credit and directed by Mr. Cory Dover, now in his fourth year as conductor.   All uniform, meal and travel expenses are paid for the Department of Athletics.
